For years, the machines that pull carbon dioxide straight from the air were more demonstration than industry — clever, costly, and small. That has changed. The first plants operating at genuine industrial scale are now drawing down carbon by the hundreds of thousands of tonnes, a threshold that moves direct air capture from proof of concept to working technology. The milestone deserves the attention it is getting. It also deserves a hard look at what it cost to reach.

The physics is unforgiving. Carbon dioxide is a trace gas, a fraction of a percent of the air, and separating something so dilute takes enormous energy. Every tonne captured requires power, and unless that power is clean, the machine risks emitting more than it removes. The new plants are sited where energy is abundant and low-carbon precisely because the arithmetic permits nothing else.

Capturing carbon from thin air is not hard because we lack the idea. It is hard because the air is so empty of it.

That is why the economics, not the engineering, will decide the technology’s fate. Removing a tonne of carbon this way still costs far more than the damage that tonne does by most reckonings, and the gap has to close dramatically before the approach scales to matter for the climate as a whole. The hope is the familiar one: that volume drives cost down, as it did for solar panels and batteries, until what is now expensive becomes merely available.

There is a risk worth naming. The mere existence of machines that undo emissions can become an excuse to keep making them — a promise of cleanup that softens the urgency of not making the mess. Captured carbon is best understood as a tool for the emissions that are genuinely hard to avoid, not a license for the ones that are not.

Reaching industrial scale is a real achievement, and a necessary one. The harder achievement still ahead is making it cheap enough, and clean enough, to count. The plants are running. Whether they ever run at the scale the climate needs depends on numbers that have only just begun to bend.
