A Distant World Shows the Clearest Sign Yet of Liquid Water
Spectra from a planet a hundred light-years away reveal a chemical fingerprint that, on Earth, only oceans and life produce. Scientists are excited — and very, very careful.
A planet circling a faint star a hundred light-years away has given astronomers their clearest sign yet that liquid water — and perhaps something stranger — exists beyond our solar system.
The evidence is not a photograph. It is a spectrum: the barcode of light that filters through a planet’s atmosphere as it passes in front of its star. When researchers pointed the newest generation of space telescope at this world for sixty hours, the barcode came back carrying the signatures of water vapour, carbon dioxide and a faint trace of a molecule that, on Earth, is produced almost exclusively by living things.
That last detail is what set phones buzzing across the field. The molecule, dimethyl sulfide, is made here by ocean plankton. Its appearance in an alien sky is tantalising. It is also, the team behind the work insists, not proof of anything.
“Extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence, and we are not there,” the lead author said, with the weary patience of a scientist who has watched headlines outrun data before. There are non-biological ways to make the molecule that researchers do not yet fully understand. The signal sits close to the limit of what the instrument can detect. It must be confirmed by independent observations before anyone uses the word that everyone is thinking.
What is not in doubt is that the planet has water, sits in the zone where that water could be liquid, and is now the most studied world outside our own. The telescope will return to it again and again over the coming year. If the faint signal holds, it will become the most important question in science. If it fades, it will become a lesson in how to look — and how to wait.
