The sun set on a major regional grid last Thursday, and for the first time in its history, the lights stayed on without a single gas peaker plant firing up to meet the evening surge. The gap was filled, instead, by batteries.

It is the kind of milestone that passes without ceremony but rewrites assumptions. For years the standard objection to wind and solar was the obvious one: the sun goes down and the wind drops, usually right when demand peaks. The answer was always supposed to be storage — and storage was always supposed to be too expensive, too small and too far away.

It arrived faster than almost anyone modelled. The cost of grid-scale batteries has fallen by roughly four-fifths in a decade. Installations that were pilot projects three years ago are now load-bearing infrastructure. On the evening in question, a fleet of battery sites that had charged on cheap midday solar discharged in a coordinated wave as households switched on ovens and air conditioners.

This does not mean the problem is solved. The batteries that smoothed one evening cannot yet bridge a still, cloudy week in winter — the genuinely hard case that will require either far more storage or different technologies entirely. Grid operators remain cautious, and gas plants still sit ready as insurance.

But the direction of travel is now unmistakable. The question has shifted from whether renewables can keep the lights on after dark to how quickly the cheaper, cleaner system displaces the older, dirtier one. On that question, the market is increasingly answering for itself.
